When I started planning my Vietnam trip, the visa options confused me. E-visa? Visa on arrival? Embassy visa? Each forum had different opinions, outdated information, and strong feelings about the “right” way to enter Vietnam.

Here’s what I eventually figured out, and the choice I made.

The e-visa is straightforward. Apply online, pay about 25 USD, receive approval in 3-5 business days, print it out, done. Single entry, 30 days maximum, valid at most international airports and some land borders. It’s the simplest option for most tourists.

Visa on arrival sounds convenient but isn’t really. You still need pre-approval from an agency, then pay additional fees at the airport, then wait in a separate line while everyone with e-visas walks past. The only advantage is for last-minute travelers who can’t wait for e-visa processing.

The embassy visa involves actual paperwork, in-person visits, and several weeks of waiting. Unless you need a longer stay or multiple entries, it’s overkill for most travelers.

I went with the e-visa for several reasons. First, certainty. I wanted to know my visa was sorted before I boarded my flight, no airport surprises. Second, speed at immigration. The e-visa line moved fastest. Third, cost. No agency fees, no airport payments, just the flat government rate.

The application process took me about twenty minutes. Passport details, travel dates, port of entry, a photo of myself, a photo of my passport. Upload, pay, wait. Three business days later, PDF in my inbox. Printed at home, added to my passport, stopped thinking about it.

Immigration at Hanoi airport was efficient. Scanned passport, scanned e-visa letter, quick look at my face, stamp, done. Maybe three minutes including the walk to the counter. The visa on arrival line was still processing people from my flight when I was already in a taxi.

One catch: the e-visa specifies your entry point. I entered through Hanoi as planned, but if I’d changed my mind and flown into Da Nang, there might have been issues. Plan your entry city before applying.

For my next trip, I’ll probably do the e-visa again. Unless I need more than 30 days initially, in which case the math changes. But for a standard tourist visit, it’s the cleanest option. Apply early, don’t stress, enjoy your trip.
