You do not need an exit visa to leave Vietnam on a normal trip. If you entered legally and you leave on or before the date your e-visa or visa-free stamp allows, you show your passport at emigration, get the exit stamp and go. There is nothing to apply for and nothing to pay.
The US State Department puts the rule in one line: to leave, Vietnam requires a valid visa, a residence card, or approval from the Immigration Department. That approval is what forums call an exit visa or exit permit. You only need it when you have neither of the first two, which in practice means an overstay, a lost or stolen passport, a baby born in Vietnam, or an exit ban.

| Your situation | Why the normal exit fails | Where it gets fixed |
|---|---|---|
| You overstayed | Your e-visa or visa-free stay has ended, so there is nothing valid to leave on. | The immigration office for the province where you are staying. Fine first, then exit approval. |
| Your passport was lost or stolen | You must leave on the passport you entered with, and the replacement carries no Vietnamese visa or entry stamp. | Police report, your embassy for the new passport, then the Immigration Department for a replacement visa. |
| A baby was born in Vietnam | The child never entered, so a new foreign passport has no Vietnamese visa or entry stamp in it. | The nearest Vietnamese immigration office. For a US citizen child, the US Embassy says Vietnam generally requires a Vietnamese passport or a Vietnamese exit visa to leave. |
| An exit ban | The authorities hold your passport while a case is investigated. | A lawyer and your embassy. No visa and no agency can lift it. |
If you overstayed
Decree 282/2025, in force since 15 December 2025, sets the fine by the number of days. Under 16 days costs VND 500,000 to 2,000,000. From 16 to 29 days it is VND 5,000,000 to 10,000,000, and from day 16 the authorities may also deport you, depending on how serious they judge the case (as Viet Nam News reported when the decree was issued). The full table, up to a year and beyond, is in our Vietnam visa overstay fine guide.
Short overstays are sometimes settled at the airport counter. Do not build a plan on that. The UK Foreign Office entry rules for Vietnam warn that the authorities can stop you leaving until the fine is paid. The US Embassy’s page on Vietnamese visas and entry/exit says an overstay is resolved in person, at the immigration office for the area where you live. So the order is:
- Go to that office before you go to the airport, with your passport and cash in dong.
- Pay the fine and keep the receipt.
- Ask how long the exit approval is valid, then book the flight inside that window.
The three offices the US Embassy lists: Hanoi, 69 Mac Thai To Street, Yen Hoa Ward (public entrance at Gate 2 on Nguyen Quoc Tri Street); Ho Chi Minh City, 196 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Xuan Hoa Ward; Da Nang, 78 Le Loi, Hai Chau, which handles foreigners living in central Vietnam. Our note on the Vietnam Immigration Department explains what that authority handles and how to reach it.
If your passport was lost or stolen
This is the case most exit-visa pages skip, and it catches people who did nothing wrong. Vietnam wants you to enter and leave on the same passport, as GOV.UK and the State Department both say. After a loss or theft, the State Department is explicit: you need both a replacement passport and a replacement Vietnamese visa to stay or to depart. The order:
- Police report. Report the loss at the local police station where it happened and keep the paper. Australia’s Smartraveller advises always getting a report and bringing a translator, and notes that police accept reports from foreigners at their discretion.
- New passport. Your embassy or consulate issues a replacement or emergency passport.
- Replacement visa. Take the new passport to the Immigration Department. Without a visa in it, emigration has nothing to stamp you out on.
- Then the flight. The embassy and the Immigration Department both keep office hours, so rebook only once the visa is in the new passport.
If the old passport turns up after you reported it, do not travel on it. GOV.UK says anyone trying to use a passport reported lost or stolen is refused entry.
Exit bans
An exit ban is not a paperwork gap, so no visa fixes it. GOV.UK says the Vietnamese authorities can bar a person from leaving and hold the passport until the case is fully investigated. The cases it names range from criminal matters to civil ones such as business disputes and road accidents, along with working without a work visa and unpaid debts, and the investigation can concern you, your family or your employer. Its advice is to consult a lawyer and contact your embassy.
Check your date before you panic
Most people searching for this are not overstaying. They met the term in a forum and want to be sure. Four checks take two minutes:
- Open your e-visa PDF and read the valid-to date. That is the last day you can be in Vietnam, not the last day you can enter.
- Came in visa-free? Count from the entry stamp in your passport, not from the day you booked.
- Look at the date the officer stamped or wrote at entry. GOV.UK tells travellers to check it before leaving border control, because a wrong date can get you accused of overstaying.
- Travelling with two passports? Leave on the one you entered with.
If all four are fine, there is no exit step to plan.
If you are leaving and coming back
A border run does not need an exit visa either. It needs a new e-visa approved before you reach the gate on the way back in, and it has to be one of the international gates the government designates for e-visa holders, ideally the port you named on the application, as the US State Department advises. Routes and costs are in Visa Run Vietnam 2026. If the new e-visa is filed but still pending and your bus leaves soon, you can speed up the application you already submitted, from 48 hours (US$69) down to 1 hour (US$209).
Do I need an exit visa to leave Vietnam?
Not for a normal departure. If you leave on or before the last day your e-visa or visa-free stay allows, on the passport you entered with, you only get an exit stamp at the airport or border. Exit approval from the Immigration Department is needed after an overstay, after a lost or stolen passport, for a baby born in Vietnam, or when an exit ban applies.
How do I leave Vietnam after losing my passport?
Report the loss to the local police and keep the report, get a replacement passport from your embassy, then take it to the Immigration Department for a replacement Vietnamese visa. The US State Department says you need both the new passport and the replacement visa to stay in or leave Vietnam.
Can I pay an overstay fine at the airport?
Sometimes, for a very short overstay, but it is not guaranteed. The UK Foreign Office warns you can be stopped from leaving until the fine is paid, and the US Embassy says an overstay is resolved in person at the immigration office for the area where you live. Going there before the airport avoids a missed flight.
Do Indian citizens need an exit visa to leave Vietnam?
No. The rule is the same for every foreign passport: leave within the dates on your e-visa, on the passport you entered with, and you only get an exit stamp. Indian passport holders need exit approval in the same cases as everyone else, such as an overstay or a lost passport.
Does a baby born in Vietnam need an exit visa?
Usually yes. A baby born in Vietnam never entered on a visa, so a new foreign passport has nothing to exit on. For a US citizen child, the US Embassy in Hanoi says Vietnam generally requires either a Vietnamese passport or a Vietnamese exit visa, and it sends parents to the nearest Vietnamese immigration office to apply.
